Powstanie Cigars kicked off the SBC series in 2016, and it’s become one of their most respected ongoing releases, dropping roughly every other year. SBC stands for Surrounded by Champions, and every entry in the series has stuck with the same 5 1/2 x 46 corona gorda size and that recognizable offset barberpole wrapper, even though the blend changes each time around. SBC26 pulls tobacco from five countries — Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, and Nicaragua — and it’s a first here, too: Powstanie has confirmed Dominican tobacco in an SBC blend. That leaf is piloto mejorado ligero, used in the filler alongside three tobaccos from the 2021 crop. And like every SBC before it, this one was handmade at Fábrica de Tabacos Nica Sueño S.A., keeping the series rooted in the same factory that built its reputation. This is the same factory who makes Roma Craft Tobacc.

What really sets the SBC series apart isn’t just what’s in the blend; it’s what the release is actually about. According to co-owner Mike Pospiech, he says each box has the following message. “It’s important to recognize that great accomplishments require the team to be successful. Too often we see success only as the face of a single man. Surrounded by Champions (number) is a cigar that pays homage to the people who made Powstanie possible. The main ingredient of greatness is the rest of the team.” That idea runs through the whole series, and SBC26 keeps it going by crediting the people behind Powstanie instead of putting one name on a pedestal.
