StillWell Star has been around for five years now, ever since Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust had the idea to blend actual pipe tobacco into a handmade cigar. It started as four regular blends plus a limited Holiday release, and it built a real following. This year, Steve Saka trimmed things down to three blends and renamed the whole line StillWell Star Dulce, now available in toro and a brand-new petit robusto size.

According to Steve Saka of Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust, he says, “For the first two years after launch, all four of the original ligas sold well and about even, but over the last couple of years, it was the sweeter ‘aromatic’ blends. (The) No. 1, No. 22 and Holidays continued to grow in sales, whereas the Bayou, English and Navy have slowly decreased in sales. All versions were selling, but the market definitely prefers the sweeter, more aromatic options, so I have decided in the best interest of the brand to focus on those- but me being me, I had to throw in that Sweet English because it is my personal favorite.”

The Aromatic Dulce Maduro is the old No. 1 blend under a new name, the Aromatic Dulce Claro is a fresh hybrid built from past Holiday releases, and the English Dulce Maduro is a tweaked version of the English No. 27 — which, by Saka’s own admission, happens to be his personal favorite. Everything’s still rolled by hand at Fábrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua, with pipe tobacco from Cornell & Diehl, and each blend now gets a sweetened cap and its own band color so you’re not squinting to tell them apart.

That pipe tobacco influence is what makes StillWell Star Dulce taste like nothing else on your shelf. The sweetened cap gives you a little sweetness right out of the gate, and from there the cigar settles into that rich, aromatic character StillWell Star built its name on. It’s smoother and sweeter than a typical full-bodied cigar, but it never loses that depth underneath.
