The inspiration behind the Dunbarton Sobremesa Tapa Negra stretches back to the late 1990s, when Saka first encountered the concept of combining wrapper styles on a single cigar. As Steve Saka says, “This is a technique I first became exposed to when I worked with Lew Rothman in the late 90’s with a brand called La Especion. I then shared the idea with my factory partners at Joya de Nicaragua and they created their Cabinetta line. What I love about this technique is how it affects the smoking experience – the cigar’s smoke remains creamy and smooth, but the spicy Nicaraguan Sun-Grown capa being in contact with your palate adds great pepper notes, but allows the cigar to remain a very relaxing mild smoking experience.”

At its core, the blend uses the same recipe as the Sobremesa Brûlée, featuring an Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrapper, a Mexican Matacapan negro binder, and carefully selected Nicaraguan fillers. What makes the Tapa Negra stand out is the addition of a Nicaraguan sun-grown cap and upper section, which places a burst of spice directly on the palate while maintaining the cigar’s signature smoothness. Produced at the famed Joya de Nicaragua factory, this release quickly became one of the highlights of the 2026 PCA Trade Show.

From the first draw, the Sobremesa Tapa Negra delivers rich notes of sweet cream, toasted almonds, cedar, and a gentle natural sweetness. As the cigar develops, the Nicaraguan sun-grown cap introduces layers of black pepper hints and baking spice that complement rather than overpower the blend.
