Dissident cigars has gotten a makeover sense it was picked up by new owners Josh and Cynn Coburn. Honestly, it feels like the brand has found its true home. While the blends and cigars have always been some of the best on the block, there wasn’t much ownership in it previously. People might rave about the packaging or about the blends, but it didn’t seem to have much direction. I don’t mean to get on my soapbox and rant about how better it is now, but I must say, with the new ownership has come new interest. But it doesn’t just end at the packaging; some of the blends have been updated as well. One, in particular, is the core line adjustment for the Dissident Soapbox Robusto.
Originally released with a Brazilian wrapper over a binder from Ecuador and fillers from Nicaragua, the new blend features a dark Sumatra Wrapper. Soon, there will be new packaging to accompany the cigar as well. While many things from the Oveja Negra factory lean on the heavy side, it is cool to see the balance of the Dissident Soapbox Robusto, coming in at full flavored but more on the medium-strength side. I am also a fan of when a Robusto measures at 5.5 inches; I feel like it’s not too long if you don’t have time for a full toro, but it gives a little more than a traditional Robusto.
In terms of flavor notes, it has a very gritty presence of earth and leather mixed with softer tones of nutmeg, rye bread, and a creamy aftertaste. Hints of white pepper, sweetness, and light caramel are faint but there. The earthy sweetness from the Sumatra Wrapper plays well with the strength of the Nicaraguan filler. I would definitely suggest pairing the Dissident Soapbox with something like a Yellowstone American Single Malt or maybe a Widow Jane 10. Overall, it is a treat, and I enjoy the other side it shows of Oveja Negra Brands.
