At the beginning of 2022, our membership, the OGT Cigar Society, experienced Nicaraguan Corojo tobacco at its finest in the highly sought-after Aganorsa Aniversario Corojo. Each member received a five-pack of the Natural Corojo blend in a 5 x54 gran Robusto vitola. Now that we are halfway into the year, it’s time to revisit Corojo tobacco, however, this time there is a slight twist on it. Introducing the Aganorsa Leaf Aniversario Maduro. Much like the Natural version, the Maduro features high priming, highly aged Nicaraguan tobacco rolled into a 5×54 gran Robusto. However, the wrapper leaf is something you won’t find outside of Aganorsa’s factory. The richly texted leaf is a unique shade-grown, Corojo Maduro wrapper from Nicaragua. Let’s unpack that, shall we?
For those who do not know, ‘shade grown’ is the process of growing the leaf under an expansion of cheesecloth. This filters the sun and creates a more mild tobacco. The process is most commonly seen among Connecticut wrapped cigars for a more smooth, sweet flavor. Aganorsa emplores this method to their Corojo and enables the flavor to have less of a bite. Once grown and cured, the fermentation process starts. The leaf undergoes a method of sitting and turning, sitting and turning in large bales known as pilones. The heat and weight bring out the termination process and the leaf darkens. It becomes so dark it eventually reaches the shade of ‘maduro’, or at least what the American market perceives it as. This intricate process is only performed on Corojo tobacco like this at the Aganora factory.
Why bring this up? That is the process of the wrapper leaf on the Aniversario Maduro cigar. And that is what the OGT Cigar Society will be enjoying this month. Each member will receive a 5 pack of this prestigious blend, to taste and age. The fillers consist of 5-year-aged Aganorsa Nicaraguan tobacco that simply enhances the overall experience. It gives me great pleasure to share this special blend with all of you! I hope you enjoy.
