Stolen Throne Crook of the Crown Toro

One of the most underrated cigars in the industry is the Stolen Throne Crook of the Crown Toro. This is one of those cigars that I instantly fell in love with just in the first third of smoking it. At the shop, we are always on the lookout for quality blends in the boutique world. A friend of mine stopped by several years ago and asked if I had ever heard of Stolen Throne. At the time, I hadn’t. He gave me the Crook of the Corwn and told me to try it. Later that day, in between doing the normal tasks at the shop, I gave it a try and lit it up. About half an inch into it, I looked them up on Instagram and got in touch with Lee Marsh, owner, and blender of Stolen Throne cigars, telling him I NEEDED this cigar. Ever since, Oak Glen Tobacconist has carried this spectacular blend.

Rolled at the Rojas factory in Nicaragua, Crook of the Crown is wrapped in a very dark, oily San Andres Maduro wrapper. But don’t let looks deceive you; as dark as this cigar is, it doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Underneath the San Andres wrapper is an Indonesian binder over Nicaraguan Filler. Released in only two sizes, a 5×50 Robusto and a 6×52 Toro, the Crook of the Crown is a regular production line for Stolen Throne. As Lee says, “Crook of the Crown is what started Stolen Throne Cigars.”

Let’s talk tasting notes. On the foot and body is musty, earth. There is a faint white pepper on light up, but it is definitely minimal. This cigar is more coffee bean, hot cocoa, and leather forward. Transitions bring some sweet creaminess, more coffee, a touch of floral, and perhaps a pecan on the finish. This is one of those cigars that pairs well with many things; coffee, bourbon; you name it. However, I would lean toward a rum, perhaps Flor de Caña or El Dorado 15. The sweetness from a dark rum is going to mix really well with rich tobacco in the Crook of the Crown. And if you have the opportunity, perhaps throw in a coffee cake with it.
