The very first blend created by Foundation Cigars was a Nicaraguan Puro called El Güegüense. Pronounced, whey-when-say, the name is an indigenous Nicaraguan word meaning, ‘The Wise man.’ Although the name Güegüense is not the easiest to pronounce, it was chosen to commemorate a cigar to the country of Nicaragua. Crafted at the Aganorsa Factory, the blend featured a Corojo 99 wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. Several years later, Melillo produced a Maduro version, called just the Wise Man. A few days ago, Foundation Cigars announced they are leaving the Aganorsa Leaf Factory and recreating the blends at the Garcia Factory, known for My Father Cigars. Introducing the new Foundation Wise Man Corojo and new Wise Man Maduro.
According to Melillo, he says, “While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the El Güegüense brand, it holds a special place in the history of Foundation Cigars. We believe it will become one of our most collectible and sought-after cigars.” That is because it is no longer produced. The original blends, spotted easily by their bands are soon going to be extinct.
While the new cigars share the original names, Melillo assured everyone that the blends are different. Using Nicaraguan seed, not all of the tobacco used is from Nicaragua. The two lines will be released in four sizes: Wise Man Corojo / Maduro Corona (5 x 48), Wise Man Corojo / Maduro Robusto (5 1/2 x 50), Wise Man Corojo / Maduro Toro (6 x 52), and Wise Man Corojo / Maduro Double Corona (7×54). The new production at the Garcia Factory will ship sometime in April. The other lines created by Foundation are made at the AJ Fernandez factory and remain unaffected by this recent change.
While there is much excitement for the new Foundation Cigars, the original Foundation El Gueguense and Wise Man Maduro are still available while they last. Sadly, once they are gone, they are gone.
