Big Sky Cigars and the Big Sky Bighorn Toro

Believe it or not, Montana state has a decent history when it comes to cigars. When people hear about Big Sky Cigars, they usually hear that it is a couple of guys out of Montana with some special tobacco craftsmanship coming out of Nicaragua. And that is exactly what Big Sky Cigars is. According to the company, in 1905 there were 107 working cigar factories. Unfortunately the passing of time has seen those factories shut down. However, the tradition of cigar making is paid homage to by the brand of Big Sky Cigars. There are six lines that come from the brand: Big Sky Madison, Bitterroot, Yellowstone, Cryptid, Black Foot, and Bighorn.

Each name of the cigar is a nod to a river in the state of Montana, and each blend is released in only one vitola. While that might bother some, I appreciate the fact that when you smoke it you are enjoying it in the size the blender intended. The Big Sky Bighorn 2.0 is released in a 6.25×52 toro. Wrapped in a dark San Andres Maduro wrapper, over binder and fillers from Nicaragua, the cigar is easily picked out from the portfolio having a vibrant blue band. A portion of the proceeds sold by the company is donated to Warriors and Quiet Waters, a Montana based therapeutic fly fishing program for post 9/11 veterans and their families.

In terms of flavor notes, according to Brandon Marsh, co-owner of Big Sky cigars, he states, “The Bighorn provides a distinct peaty flavor that pairs well with a nice scotch or bourbon. Big Horn 2.0 is a beautifully constructed San Andreas cigar; full body in strength with hints of coffee, dark cocoa, earth, and hints of slight pepper.” While I definitely pick up the dark cocoa, earth, and slight pepper, there are phantom notes of stone fruit sweetness. It doesn’t seem to always appear, but when it does, it’s a beautiful note. Additional flavors of dried fruit and leather also awaken the palate. Big Sky Bighorn has risen to the top of some lists of people this year, and it commands attention from anyone who enjoys a San Andres Maduro from Nicaragua.
