The Octopus has eight arms, or perhaps three? If you haven’t heard, Artesano Del Tobacco has released its limited edition of the El Pulpo cigar, a three-lancero twisted Culebra. Where exactly does the concept of the Culebra come from? It is rumored, or perhaps fabled, that in the earlier days of cigars, Cuban cigar factory workers were permitted to take home one cigar. Wanting more of a smoking experience and cigars to share with the family, several rollers started taking thin cigars like Lanceros and Coronas and twisting them together while they were still pliable. Wrapped at the foot and head with a ribbon, they would pass it off as one cigar. Whether or not this is true, who can say? However, it does add a bit of mystique to the concept.
Culebra translates to snake, and it’s not a wonder when you pull these three cigars apart. This Culebra is not meant to be a snake but rather an Octopus. The El Pulpo Octo Ocho is constructed from three 7×38 Petite Lanceros. The blend is the same as the original, a San Andres Maduro over Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is rolled and blended at the AJ Fernandez factory in Nicaragua. Each Culebra is shipped in an individual coffin, with three coffins to a box.
This limited edition has already been allocated and sold out to retailers nationwide. If you are a fan of what Artesano has been accomplishing, and even more so, a fan of EL Pulpo, don’t pass on this gem! This is a historical collector’s item for the company, and the cigars are also home runs. With Aficionado giving the Belicoso a 94 rating, I anticipate hearing more about Pulpo as the year progresses.
