Monsters, folklore, and black pepper. What do these three things have in common? If you say the Big Sky Cryptid 5×60 then you are right on the money. Not exactly a limited cigar; however, the ferocity of how quickly these cigars get picked up might as well make it limited. Big Sky cigars is a boutique brand based in Montana, using rich tobacco from Esteli, Nicaragua. Their portfolio is comprised of two Habanos, a Maduro, and Connecticut, but the list doesn’t end there. Alongside their bright Big Sky labels, they added Cryptid to their portfolio.
As it has been said, Cryptids are animals that cryptozoologists believe may exist somewhere in the wild, but are not recognized by science. Big Sky Cigars have a plan for this type of regional based legend. As Brandon Marsh, Owner of Big Sky Cigars, has stated, “In Northwest Montana, what lies beneath the waters of Flathead Lake is just as legendary as the lake itself. To date, there have been 109 documented sightings. What lurks in the deep? Big Sky Cigar, Co. would like to introduce you to Cryptid.”
The cigar itself is dark and rustic, wrapped in a very textured Mexican San Andres leaf. Underneath lies a binder and fillers from Nicaragua. The size is only released in a rather beefy 5×60 vitola. Flavors of dark cocoa raisins, leather, earth, and light wood accompany this full bodied beauty. I would suggest a rich bourbon, or maybe a coffee old fashioned (That’s what I paired it with, and it worked perfectly.) Don’t sleep on Big Sky Cigars’ Cryptid, and taste the power of Nicaragua and the allure of the unknown from Flathead Lake. This one is humidor worthy.
