A Cigar for those who think different. This is the slogan for the Aganorsa Leaf Lunatic Torch. One of the most eye-catching labels from Aganorsa, the torch is a great experiment for the endless debate of ‘does the wrapper make up most of the flavor of the cigar?’ Not sure? Light up a Lunatic torch Robusto. What may look to some as an unfinished cigar, the Torch sports what is known as a brush foot, or to some, a shaggy foot. In other words, the wrapper leaf stops short before the filler and binder leaves. The purpose of this is to light those filler leaves and taste the tobaccos by themselves. As you smoke it, the burn will transition into the wrapper leaf and ultimately give you the opportunity to note the flavor change.
Terence Rielly, CEO of Aganorsa Leaf says, “On a brush foot, the wrapper is removed from the first half inch of the cigar, allowing you to smoke the fillers and binder which wake up your palate with a burst of spice before settling down for a more rounded blend once you reach the wrapper. Enjoy understanding how the wrapper influences the blend. Smoke one when you have the time to sit back and appreciate the importance of blending the right tobaccos to create an optimal experience.”
Wrapped in a dark Corojo 99 wrapper, with a binder and fillers from Nicaragua, the Aganorsa Leaf Lunatic Torch is a full bodied, full-flavored, medium-strength cigar. Spice is the first note I pick up, along with a citrus zest and light sweetness. When the wrapper leaf comes into play, dried fruits, pie crust, and wood transition beautifully. The Torch is one of those cigars that start out with a punch and then smooth out as you smoke it. I would suggest a barrel spice forward bourbon, a coffee tamed with cream, or perhaps even an Isay scotch if it’s a cold day. Either way, Aganorsa Leaf Lunatic Torch is definitely on my favorites list, and is an excellent example of dynamic range.
