Let’s talk origin stories. Several years before OGT even existed, when I was obsessed with cigars but didn’t own a shop, I remember sitting on my front porch, enjoying a stick, and watching interview videos from the summer trade show. An announcement was given about a collaboration between Matt Booth, AJ Fernandez, and Robert Caldwell. Three icons of the industry were teaming up to create a box-pressed Maduro called the Truth. I was ecstatic. Right away, I knew this was a cigar I needed to have. Even back then, I would buy a box to experience, but even more excitingly, I would age them. The Truth was that I needed a box of 20. However, by the time the Truth was going to be released, the name had to change due to copyright issues, and true to Caldwell fashion, it was changed to simply The T. That Christmas, my wife Mallory gifted me a box after I dropped some no to subtle hints. That cigar wasn’t what I expected. I guessed it would be a medium-strength, nice medium-flavored cigar similar to others I had sampled. Boy, oh boy, was it something better. You know those cigars you smoke while in the company of others and it suddenly causes you to stop and look at it, like a slap in the face, or should I say palate? The T Maduro had my attention.
Why bring that up? Fast forward to 2019, when I was opening the shop, I had posted a video, a very bad video, I might say, proudly pronouncing that OGT would have the T Maduro on the shelf. I had opened an account with Caldwell and was very excited to have this cigar in our repetiteur. However, little did I know that that was the same year the T cigar would be discontinued. Yeah, discontinued! To my disappointment, that cigar, as well as its counterparts, the T Connecticut and T Sun Grown Habano disappeared.
Fast Forward to the present day. I must state the unfortunate news that the factory where Caldwell Cigars and other companies like Room 101, Freud, and others burned down in the Dominican Republic. I am so sorry to hear the devastating news and the impact it will have on these companies. However, the cigar community has often been described as a family. And true to family-style culture, AJ Fernandez has stepped up to assist Caldwell cigars in their loss. For a very limited run, AJ and Caldwell Cigars return with the T Maduro Box Pressed, the T Connecticut, and the T Habano Sun Grown. This is a very short run to help Caldwell while they readjust. If you have a chance, don’t hesitate on these cigars. I am proud to say after a three-year-long journey, the AJ and Caldwell collab is finally at Oak Glen Tobacconist. I sincerely hope you get a chance to try this special cigar.
