The focus of different tobaccos varies in the cigar industry from company to company. Common tobaccos we hear of are Connecticut, San Andres, Habano, and so on. Blackbird Cigar Company and Jonas Santana have a different specialty from Brazil. Through many of Jonas’ blends, we see the Brazilian Cubra leaf. Blackbird cigar is not the only company that uses this unique leaf, but they certainly master it. We see it being used twice in their core line, and many other times in their limited like the Macaw and a few from Privada Cigar Club. In their core line the Unkind and Cuco boast the Cubra wrapper. The difference between the two blends is many, one being the strength. The Unkind, formally known as the Raven, is a medium strength, medium plus body, while the Cuco is stronger.
The Cuco is dark in appearance, with pronounced veins running down the cigar. Blackbird cigars are easy to recognize from their striking colored bands, Cuco being the grey. The Oily Brazilian Cubra leaf encases an Indonesian binder over Dominican fillers. The result is a savory light up with notes of Cocoa, earth, light saltiness, stone fruit, faint pepper, and hints of sweetness. The Cuco Toro by Blackbird is decently substantial being a 6×54. The ratio between wrapper leaf and filler tobacco smooths the blend out well, not being overwhelming to the palate.
“The Cuco is the strongest from the line,” says Jonas. “It’s Grey band is to show the end of the day. Each cigar is meant to be smoked through the day and the band shows that. The grey on the Cuco is in the grey light of the day.” The Cuco offers a fuller and stronger smoking experience to those who enjoy a stronger cigar but is not overpowering in any way. It has a great balance in flavor and is incredibly complex. It’s a great example of Blackbird Cigar Co. and their ability to use the Brazilian Cubra leaf.
