The release of the Cigar 1 duo by JC Newman and Privada Cigar Club brings two different blends, the Rose and Cream. I had mentioned the Privada Good Life from JC Newman, which uses a high priming Connecticut Broadleaf. The blend is a great expression of the tobacco, offering notes of Chocolate cake, dark earth, bread, and sweet sugar. With the complexity of the Good Life, I have much expectation for the Cigar 1 Cream by Privada Cigar. This blend however varies in a few ways, the most prominent might be the wrapper leaf – a Brazilian Mata Fina. Mata Fina is somewhat on the more rare side to see these days due to the set of difficulties for production. Whether it is price or availability, Mata Fina isn’t the easiest. Leave it to Privada to go the extra mile and use the Broadleaf, another tobacco in scarcity, for their initial blend by JC Newman and to follow it up with Mata Fina with Brazil.
Mata Fina is grown in the Recôncavo of Brazil, a strip of land near the Northeast. This dark, oily leaf is arguably the most famous coming out of the country. We’ve seen this wrapper on blends like Bellas Artes Maduro from AJ Fernandez, Java by Drew Estate, Laranja Reserva Escuro by Espinosa, and a few others. The diversity of the leaf offers a wide variety of flavors in combination with the blend.
If you have seen the press releases or previous posts about Cigar 1, you know that each cigar comes in its own personal bag inserted with a unique rectangle Boveda pouch. The Rose is encased in a rosy pink sleeve while the Cream is in white. This special duo is first released to select accounts in the LCA, Limited Cigar Association, and OGT Cigars is one of them!
