What started as an exclusive for the state of Texas has now been made available nationwide, and boy oh boy am I glad. Ever since I heard about this cigar I have wanted to get my hands on it. It seems the wait was worth it. Crowned Heads Yellow Rose Torpedo is the Texas version of John Huber’s complex Connecticut Broadleaf Blend. Based on the 1800’s song Yellow Rose, this cigar embodies several different salutes to the state. Originally this cigar was made in two other vitolas with different names: for Tennessee, being that the company was formed in Nashville, there was an exclusive 5.5×52 called the Tennessee Waltz and a 5 5/8×46 Corona Gorda called Paniola for Hawaii. The Texas version, no surprise, is a bit larger in size, and packs a full flavor! Mounted with only a single yellow foot band, Crowned Heads Yellow Rose holds a striking appearance being a whopping 6.25×54 soft box press.
The wrapper featured on this cigar is a very rustic-looking Connecticut Broadleaf. Often times, when I think of Broadleaf, I think dark, oily, almost midnight. However, a host of Connecticut Broadleaf cigars don’t have that appearance. In fact, I would say this cigar almost looks gritty. However, don’t let that fool you, this Broadleaf is packed with flavor. The Crowned Heads Yellow Rose uses a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper of a Nicaraguan binder and fillers.
The Yellow Rose Torpedo offers a bold presence of earth, leather, light spice and retro-hale sweetness at light up. That continues into deeper tones of coffee, cocoa, more earth, and dry peanuts. I would say this cigar lands in the medium plus strength level and a full flavor and body. I picture the Yellow Rose with a vanilla, maple forward bourbon pairing exceptionally. After the long wait, and experiencing this cigar several times, I would say this might be my favorite blend from Crowned Heads thus far. I cannot wait to try the Tennessee Waltz, given the fact it is the same blend in a smaller size.
