Foundation Olmec Maduro Toro. This has got to take the cake for me when it comes to Foundation cigars. By far my favorite Nick Melillo has created. Overall, I am a huge fan of Foundation Cigars, and the portfolio he has created. From Gueguense (The cigar no one can pronounce), to the Tabernacle, Highclere Castle, and now Olmec, he seems to have a cigar for everyone’s palate. Olmec lies on the heavier side of things, but offering refinement and balance at the same time. Honestly, they have a Padron esque vibe about them, from appearance to flavor. But I find myself seeking out Olmec more on the regular. Delivered in 12 count boxes, box pressed in all vitolas, the presentation definetly hits.
According to Nick Melillo he says, “The San Andrés Negro wrapper tobacco comes from the rich volcanic soil of the land of the Olmecs. It is fermented slowly at low temperatures to preserve the natural oils that give flavor. The blend delivers a full-bodied smoking experience with rich flavors of cacao, dark espresso, and spice without being too aggressive.”
Perhaps confusing to some is the fact there are two wrappers; one Claro and one Maduro, both are San Andres. The Claro, I feel, offers a bit more spice and woodiness. The Maduro has more sweetness on the back end. As Meillo stated, there are flavors like cacao, espresso, and spice, but also hints of earth, coffee bean, touches of cinnamon, and charred oak. I really enjoy both, but if I had to lean toward one, I would probably say the Maduro. This is also pairs exceptionally well with an earthly bourbon or American whiskey. In my opinion, this cigar accomplishes many things I look for in a high quality, full throttle cigar. While I won’t say it smokes just like a Padron, (in my opinion everyone says that), but it definitely seems have influences like that.
The unfortunate thing about Olmec is that it’s not the easiest cigar to get ahold of. Once it is available, I suggest you check it out. They tend to pop up here and there and then disappear. Foundation Olmec Maduro Toro is a BANGER!!!!
