One of the more unique projects the OGT Cigar Society has worked on this year is the Fistful of Smoke Robusto. When I came across this Robusto, the flavors immediately spoke to me. But to understand this blend, it is best to know who made it and its history. Crafted by none other than AJ Fernandez, one of the more sought-after blenders, this unique cigar demonstrates his ability to craft complex cigars. His portfolio is vast, but it doesn’t even measure to the amount of cigars he has blended for other companies. He is responsible for amazing blends like El Pulpo from Artesano Del Tobacco, Quattro from Aging Room, Blue Cheese Toro, and more!
The Fistful of Smoke is an exclusive 5×50 Robusto made just for the membership. It features a natural Habano wrapper over the binder and fillers from Nicaragua. The amount of flavor and the transitions stood out to me the most. The cold draw brings some berry flavor, either dried blueberries or raspberries. Light up brings mid-spice, maybe white pepper, but it’s not in your face. The smoke texture is meaty, presenting a medium plus body, full flavored, medium strength experience. The notes are warm and rustic with a wave of earth, sandalwood, light leather, a hint of creaminess, and pie crust sweetness. Somewhere in there is a light roast coffee mixed with more wood notes. The transition of spice at the beginning to sweetness in the final two thrids is prominent.
While there are a decent amount of ‘stronger’ cigars released through the OGT Cigar Society, Fistful of Smoke is a perfect medium cigar. I think it is approachable to nearly everyone, not overwhelming to lighter smokers, and offers a satisfying boldness of smoke and flavor to fuller bodied enjoyers. I am happy to announce our re-release of A Fistful of Smoke with nearly an additional year of age! One of the purposes of the Society is to see the transition of age when a cigar has a chance to rest. This is a perfect way to experience that process with a cigar that nearly has three years on it. Order your pack now and enjoy this complex creation from Aj Fernandez.
