The Black Works Studios Hornet, formally known as the green one, has also gotten a new face this year. One of the more unique tasting blends by Black Works, the Hornet utilizes a dark Ecuadorian Maduro wrapper coupled with inflections of candela at the cap and foot. This has always been a staple in the portfolio, but much like the Black Works Killer Bee Cigar, the Hornet was confined to one size, a 5×48 ‘thin’ robusto. This year, a new vitola has been added; you can now get it in a 6×46 Corona Larga. I like this inflection because you still get that rich flavor profile on a thin, gauged cigar but a longer smoking experience due to the six-inch length.
According to James Brown, “The Killer Bee and The Hornet have garnered immense popularity and praise among cigar enthusiasts. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and bold flavors, these two lines have become cornerstones of the BLK WKS core collection. We are confident that these new sizes will further captivate the palates of those who appreciate the distinct character and complexity that our cigars offer.”
As I mentioned, the wrapper on the Black Works Hornet Corona Larga is comprised of a Nicaraguan Binder over Nicaraguan fillers. While the smoking experience offers notes of spice, dark cocoa, earth, and espresso, there are hints of creamy grassiness upon lighting the foot and the spiral of candela on the cap. This is a great expression of flavor change and a complimentary experience with both tobaccos. This new size has just hit the market and is a very eligant interpretation of the Black Works Hornet cigar. This is not a cigar you want to sleep on.
