Perhaps the most well-known of Jonas Santna’s cigar blends is the Crow San Andres or his purple-banded Unkind Brazilian Cubra. However, one of the things I enjoy about Blackbird Cigar Co. is the diversity in his portfolio. A cigar I feel doesn’t get enough recognition is his Finch Sumatra. Many cigar brands offer lighter cigars in the form of a Connecticut, and he does have one, but usually, that’s where it ends. Commonly a brand will offer a shade grown, a sun grown, and a maduro. Instead, Blackbird uses many different tobaccos to accomplish a wide range of palates. Among their offerings, they have the Finch Sumatra.
Wrapped in a light, coffee colored Sumatra leaf, with a binder from Indonesia, and fillers from USA and the Dominican Republic, the Finch packs a punch of flavor and a smooth experience. As Jonas has said, the Finch is a cigar for the beginning of the day, just as the sun is coming up and the sky is lit up in a light blue haze. Start your day out with the Finch Robusto to warm up your palate and get started. Released in three sizes, Robusto 5×50, Toro 6×54, and Corona 6×46, the Finch is a regular production cigar and the latest release from Blackbird’s core line.
In terms of tasting notes, the Finch stands out from the Blackbird line. On light up, there are faint hints of white pepper, with warm tones of pie crust, brown sugar, baking spice, and faint earth. As the cigar burns to the second and final thirds, warmer tones of sweetness, cedar, and coffee are on the backend and toasted nuts. In terms of pairing, I cannot stress enough that this cigar is magic with coffee. Perhaps that is why it is a favorite of mine; although I gravitate toward medium plus to full strength cigars, there is a time and place for many others throughout the day. Corojo 99 is usually my go to when I enjoy a cigar with coffee, but Sumatra is a quick runner up. The Blackbird Finch is an excellent choice to start the day with and seems even more special in the Robusto format.
