Whelp, it’s March, and here in sunny California, it’s not so sunny. The flurries of snow, waves of rain, and flooding near the shop have been anything but constant. However, let’s not focus on that. I wanted to draw attention to the first quarter of 2023 and what the OGT Cigar Society has brought us. Since the beginning, I have wanted to set this year apart from the previous. What do I mean by that? Our goal has always been to bring custom experiences to our community. One of the best ways is to focus the spotlight on the current talents within the cigar industry, specifically, the craft side. While I highly encourage seeking out the core lines and constant cigars these blenders put out; I also wanted to zoom into what they do best. What do I mean by that? We kicked off this year with the custom OGT Stulac Project, a 6×46 Corona featuring a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.
The OGT X Stulac Project came about due to Paul’s ability to blend with Broadleaf. We’ve seen his stellar brands like Red Screaming Sun and Nuevo Comienzo, and I wanted to highlight that profile in a smaller ring gauge. The 6×46 ratio worked beautifully, giving an extra kick of flavor and boldness while maintaining the balance of Stulac’s blending style.
The following month brought the 6×54 Stallone Silver Blaze, also featuring a Connecticut Broadleaf, however, a Medio Tiempo grade. That is amazing as well: in the midst of a Broadleaf shortage, we were able to start the year with Broadleaf drops back to back! The Stallone Silver Blaze seems to be the running favorite, at least in popularity. Silver Blaze offers a unique profile of espresso, almonds, cream, and pepper, one of the cigars that stands out among many.
Our March drop came from the vault – an AJ Fernandez 5×50 Robusto aged over two years called ‘A Fistful of Smoke.’ The first installment in our trilogy of ‘The Dragon with no name,’ The Fistful featured a medium-strength experience with amazing notes of sandalwood, salt, berries, leather, and faint sweetness. The smoke output on this stick made it aptly named, and the construction well represents the talents of AJ.
This month, April 2023, brings the highest dollar cigar we have ever dropped, the Dissident Home 2023. This beautifully crafted Barberpole uses a mix of Ecuadorian Maduro and Corojo wrapper, over an Ecuadorian binder, and fillers from Nicaragua. Released only once a year, and missed last year, the inception of Home is much anticipated, and all our members can save on a five pack! This cigar comes out of one of my favorite factories: Oveja Negra. If you are not a member, I highly suggest you check this one out; not only do you save 40%, but it’s an amazing blend of elevated over many others released. Sign up while spots last!
