There are several flashy, limited cigars on the market. Are they smokable, or are they just easy on the eyes? One would hope they live up to the visual hype, but unfortunately, that is not always the case. It is, however, the case for the Alec Bradley Filthy Hooligan. Released once a year for St. Patrick’s Day, this Candela/Habano-wrapped barber pole cigar is visually and flavorfully satisfying. I say this, bearing in mind that this cigar might be intended for particular palates and not a blanket statement that will satisfy everyone. Personally, even though I prefer that medium-plus to full-strength profile, the flavor on this cigar makes it a banger! What is the official press release on this cigar? According to Alec Bradley, they released the following statement:
“The double wrapped Filthy Hooligan Barber Pole has great sweetness, complexity and balance. Our candela has really unique flavor characteristics which enthusiasts seek out in our annual releases. It features a flavorful, bright green Candela wrapper leaf, celebrating the onset of Spring.”
There is a small downside to this year’s release, though. Alec Bradley cigars are celebrating the selling of their company to General cigars. That is a huge accomplishment for them, and they deserve all the congratulations they get! However, unfortunately, when a smaller company in this industry sells, there is usually a difference in profile and quality. We may see that in the coming year, which means this year’s Filthy Hooligan might be the last version of the cigar we know and love. With that said, let’s get into the flavor notes. On light up, the Alec Bradley Filthy Hooligan seems a bit more punchy with immediate notes of almonds, grass, oak, and hints of subtle spice, perhaps white pepper intermixed with sweetness. As it continues, the impressionable vanilla note I remember from last year comes in and takes over with more almonds, oak, and earth. In terms of pairing, I would suggest creme brulee and a light Basil Hayden or maybe even Red Breast Irish Whiskey to stay in the theme.
Either way, this year is a home run and the perfect way to give the nod to Alec Bradley’s many years in the business. I believe this year’s Filthy Hooligan cigar turned out better than last.
