The T. Habano, or perhaps the Spice Bomb. Maybe not completely, but this stick definitely has some ‘zing’ to it. A while back, I posted a blog about the return of a cigar I absolutely loved, the Caldwell, Booth, and AJ collaboration, ‘The T Maduro.’ Along with the Maduro inflection, several years ago, Caldwell released to others that accompanied it, The T. Connecticut and The T. Habano. Unlike the Maduro version, I had never tried the other two when they were first released. The trilogy was brought back on a small scale production due to William Ventura factory burning down in the Dominican Republic. Most of Calsdwell’s production was held there, along with aged tobaccos for their blends. In an effort to help Caldwell out, AJ Fernandez recreated the blends of old and re-released all three, including The T. Habano.
This blend was meant to sit between the two others, not mild by any means, but not too strong either. And interestingly enough, this was the last blend created by the three industry icons. The original release was in four sizes: Corona, Double Robusto, Robusto Minor, and Toro. I am quite partial to the Double Robusto 5.4×54 size. There is something about a fat Robusto that gets me every time. Wrapped in a dark coffee-colored Habano Sungrown Wrapper, over a Binder and Fillers from Nicaragua, The T. Habano is a pleasing cigar to the eye and taste.
Let’s talk flavors. I wasn’t kidding when I said this cigar had some zing to it. There is a fair amount of spice at the front when you light her up. Not sure if it is pepper or cinnamon, but I lean toward a combination of both. If it is pepper, I’d say it is red pepper. A wave of cedar and woods, pushes the pepper upward, almost a sharper tone while being balanced by a pie crust, toasted almond note. A fair amount of coffee is at the backend, maybe espresso and touches of sweetness. Regarding pairing, I would suggest a hazelnut coffee, perhaps even a latte. If you are going with a whiskey, maybe Balvenie double wood 12 or a Pinhook if you want a stronger experience.
