“Anyone who has smoked Connecticut cigar brands of old knows the Perfecto is a classic size. “Back in the day, it was the vitola of choice for connoisseurs. When it came time to create a line extension to the Tabernacle, the blend in these two sizes could not be ignored.” – Nick Melillo, Chief of the Broadleaf
There has been a lot of buzz about Foundation Cigars at the shop. And why not? Foundation Cigar Company has been a favorite brand since before Oak Glen Tobacconist. Nick does an amazing job with his blends, and this year, with the release of both Olmec Claro and Olmec Maduro, the company is back in the limelight. However, one of the staples, and perhaps my favorite blend from Foundation, is Tabernacle. I have talked about this cigar before. Perhaps it is due to falling back in love with it every time I light it up. Using high primings of dark Connecticut Broadleaf tobacco, the Tabernacle is a heavy hitting, rich-flavored Maduro, full of notes like savory burnt ends, dark chocolate, earth, white pepper, and light sweetness.
However, the brand doesn’t stop there. Newly added to the line are both the David and Goliath Tabernacles. Both are perfectos with slight tweaking on the original blends. Rolled at AJ Fernandez’s factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, the Goliath perfecto is a 5×58 powerhouse. I would venture to say perhaps the size is a bit stronger than the original Toro. With that said, it isn’t overbearing in any way. Typical of Nick Melillo’s blending style, the Goliath is well-balanced and full in flavor while bringing decent strength. For anyone who is a fan of the original, the Tabernacle Foundation is a must try.
