New blood. Blended by Alec Cuevas, the youngest member of the fifth generation of cigar makers, the new release from Casa Cuevas is special. This is a first on many fronts; the fact that Luis Cuevas’ son is the blender is one of them. This is the first cigar Alec has created, and according to him, it meant something more too. Alec says he got his start working at a retail shop in Florida. There, he tried as many new cigars as possible, building his palate and trying to understand construction, balance, flavor, etc. Although he grew up around tobacco and his father is a fourth-generation tobacco supplier, he wanted to get as much experience as possible, learning the industry, what’s hot on the market, and testing his palate.
Earlier this year, Alec emerged with his first blend ever, the Casa Cuevas Sangre Nueva. This is possibly the most complex cigar in the Cuevas portfolio yet, boasting a sweet, earthy Cameroon wrapper. The Cameroon adds many layers to this diverse cigar. While Honduran Cameroon already has natural sweetness, it overlays a Honduran Corojo, not all that different than the wrapper leaf used on the previous release, the Casa Cuevas Patrimonio. Alec placed inside fillers from the DR, Nicaragua, Pennsylvania, and even a secret ingredient, a particular leaf known for its savory BBQ aroma. In this combination, the Casa Cuevas Sangre Nueva is a different but much more satisfying take on a Honduran Cameroon.
Released at the 2022 PCA Trade Show, Sangre Nueva has become a quick favorite. Packaged in ten-count boxes, the Sangre Nueva is available in Toro, Robusto, and even a 6×58 Perfecto. This drop was one of the more impressive releases of the trade show. If you haven’t had the pleasure of lighting up a Cuevas Sangre Nueva, do yourself a favor. You won’t be disappointed.
