American Viking cigars are no stranger to Oak Glen Tobacconist. The Dama Valada Toro won the most votes for OGT Cigar of the Year 2020 and Liga Zebra Toro won 2021. However, out of the five cigar portfolio, one seems to get overlooked by the others. Perhaps the most smooth and refined out of American Viking’s line up is the Obrigado. Translated in Portuguese for ‘Thank you’, this blue labeled Habano is a Nicaraguan Puro from the Plasencia factory. For those who are not familiar with Plasencia tobacco, they are one of the premier growers and suppliers of Tobacco in Nicaragua and Honduras. Their tobacco is unique and always of the highest quality. after years of supplying tobacco to countless cigar makers, Plasencia crafted their own brand featuring their name. They are a higher dollar cigar, but when you smoke one, it’s not to wonder why. If any American Viking cigars remind me of the Plasencia brand, I would say Obrigado is the closest.
There is a calming warmth to the blend somewhere in that medium strength range. It would be a misstep to say Obrigado is mild, but it isn’t aggressive either. In fact, the Obrigado Toro is a perfect cigar for just about anyone. Whether you are transitioning from Mild and want to venture into bolder territory or you enjoy a stronger cigar but you prefer something more gentle with coffee in the morning, my recommendation is right there. Yes, this is an exception cigar with a creamed coffee.
The Habano luz wrapper offers notes of nuttiness, earth, cedar, caramel, and light spice on the retro. Many of those warm, sweet tones transition fuller into the second third. It embodies the argument that not all Nicaraguan tobacco is blasting you with pepper. However, it does possess the richness of flavor you find in a puro. Altogether, Obrigado remains one of my favorites from American Viking. ‘Obrigado’ to you American Viking Cigars for producing such a complex, enjoyable smoke.
