One of the first brands we started carrying in the OGT Humidor, and one of the favorites is American Viking Cigars by Tim Swanson and Cigar Daily. Last year, his barber pole Liga Zebra was the OGT Humidor Cigar of the year, and his red labeled Dama Valada won the previous year. The accolades are high for his brand and each blend is unique in its own way. As a whole, American Viking Cigars demonstrate full flavor complexity somewhere in that medium strength profile. However, that is not to say that there are not some stronger cigars in the portfolio. The strongest blend is found in the one and only Maduro, the Box Pressed Rebellion. This Nicaraguan Puro boasts a Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. Tim Swanson of Cigars Daily stated the following:
“The central design element of this cigar (a pawn wearing a crown) eternally represents the underdog. This stick is for everyone that has gone underappreciated, or who has been taken advantage of. With this cigar in hand, you will be the king you were always meant to be. With regards to flavor, this blend comes with a dark Habano wrapper and all Nicaraguan binder and fillers. After box pressing the blend, you’ll find a vibrant flavor profile with notes of milk chocolate, almonds, and leather with an ever present sweetness from the wrapper leaf. Full and satisfying, fit for a king.”
I find the 6×60 vitola especially flavorful, and that’s saying quite a bit. Traditionally, 6×60 is not my go-to. I often think some of the flavors are lost. However, the larger ring gauge lends itself well to the blend and is a great representation of Nicaraguan Tobacco. American Viking Cigars is one of those brands that utilize Plasencia tobacco extremely well and embody amazing construction and flavor.
